About Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage is a relatively short treatment, around 30 minutes and can be done almost anywhere!  It can be carried out with or without oil and you don't need to remove any clothes, unlike with other massages.

Key Benefits

  • Relieves muscle tension
  • Helps to improve skin condition
  • Relieves eye strain
  • Provides a sense of wellbeing
  • May improve concentration
  • Improves circulation
  • Promotes sleep
  • Helps to rid the body of toxins

History of Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage has been used for thousands of years in India and is based on the Ayurvedic Healing System.

It was originally used for the health benefits of massage and to keep hair shiny and in good condition, as the hot climate would dry the hair.

Generations of the family would give and receive Indian Head Massages at the same time and children as young as six are taught how to give an Indian Head Massage!

In the West, the traditional Indian Head Massage has been adapted to incorporate the back and shoulders where we tend to hold a lot of tension.  So the Indian Head Massage that I practice involves massaging the back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face.

The Use Of Oils in Indian Head Massage

You don't have to use oils with an Indian Head Massage but they can have a very beneficial effect. Some of the oils you can ask for are listed below with their benefits:

Sesame Oil

Helps to relieve muscular aches, pains and stiffness

Moisturises dry skin and hair

NB: This may irritate sensitive skin

Mustard Oil

Relieves tension, pain and stiffness in muscles

Encourages healthy, glossy hair growth

Stimulates blood circulation to the scalp, promoting warmth

NB: This may irritate sensitive skin

Olive Oil

Helps to moisturise the skin and hair, preventing dryness

Helps to relieve muscular stiffness and pain

NB: Ideal for children as rarely causes irritation

Coconut Oil

Softens and moisturises the hair, useful for dry, brittle hair

Encourages healthy hair growth and helps to relieve any inflammation

NB: May irritate skin, not for nut allergy sufferers!

Sweet Almond Oil

Eases muscular tension, pain and stiffness

Excellent moisturiser for skin and hair

Promotes healthy, glossy hair as circulation to scalp is stimulated

Ideal for dry hair due to chemical treatments eg. perm or colouring

NB: Not for nut allergy sufferers!

Jojoba Oil

Good for moisturising the skin and hair

Helps to relieve inflammation so is excellent for acne, eczema, psoriasis and arthritis

These oils can be mixed together or can be used as a base oil with essential oils.

It may be necessary to carry out an allergy test before using certain oils or if you have sensitive skin so please ring in advance if you would like a treatment with oil on your first session.
